“The holy creature chases away the bad spirits. Each part of his body vibrates through every breath. Its breathing is force, is fearlessness. Lion: The King of animals”
The lion is the king of animals. According to the Buddhist myth, the lion is Buddha’s pet. It brings fortune, prosperity as well as chases away the bad spirit. The dance is originally invented in China with Buddhist propagation, lion dance is now popular all over Asia. In Vietnamese, it’s called “Múa Lân”. This routine is practiced generally by the students of martial art’s school, because the training applies many acrobatic exercises.
Every lion dance performance often implies a prayer or a wish for goodness, wealth, health, etc. It stems from a belief that the lion chases away the evils, who could be cracked down all year long, and therefore, bring along fortune and prosperity that people wish for. Following the rhythm of drum, gong and cymbals, lions move, stroll and play with Buddha. We usually assist the lion with his plays, his powerful and energetic movement; Lion will lead everyone into the place and he offers the fortune and the prosperity after he leaves. The performance also has Laughing Buddha, who plays with the lion, teases him, and guides him in the performance.
